Understanding 13F Filings
What is a 13F Filing?
Form 13F is a quarterly report filed with the SEC by institutional investment managers with at least $100 million in qualifying equity assets. These filings reveal the fund's long positions in US-listed equities and equity options.
Filing Schedule
13F forms must be filed within 45 days of each quarter end:
- Q1 (March 31) - Due by May 15
- Q2 (June 30) - Due by August 14
- Q3 (September 30) - Due by November 14
- Q4 (December 31) - Due by February 14
What's Included
- Name and class of security
- Number of shares owned
- Market value of holdings
- Investment discretion (sole, shared, or none)
- Voting authority
Limitations
- Only shows long positions (no shorts)
- 45-day delay means data can be stale
- Doesn't include foreign securities
- No derivatives except options
